In what can only be called a historic moment for the global tech industry, NVIDIA and OpenAI have announced a massive strategic alliance. The deal, which could see NVIDIA pump in as much as $100 billion over time, is being described as the largest AI infrastructure push ever attempted.
The partnership has been formalised through a letter of intent, under which NVIDIA will help build up to 10 gigawatts (GW) of advanced AI systems for OpenAI’s future platforms and model deployments. To put it in context, 10 GW is the energy output of about 10 nuclear plants—enough to power the entire peak electricity need of many big cities in the world. The sheer magnitude of this project shows how seriously the two companies are working towards next-generation AI, including goals like artificial general intelligence (AGI) and superintelligence.
Building the Next AI Factories
This isn’t just a deal where one buys and the other sells—it’s a deep, long-term collaboration. OpenAI’s ambitious software and model development will now be closely aligned with NVIDIA’s upcoming hardware platforms. Both teams are planning to co-design their future roadmaps, creating an unmatched level of synergy in the AI space.
The rollout will begin in 2026 with a 1 GW infrastructure deployment on NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform. Eventually, it will scale up to the full 10 GW over several phases. These next-gen “AI factories” will be gigantic data centres purpose-built to train and run extremely complex AI models that demand unprecedented compute power.
The Financial and Industry Ripple Effect
The money side of the deal is just as unique. OpenAI will pay for NVIDIA’s chips upfront in cash, while NVIDIA’s investment—up to $100 billion—will be released in stages as each gigawatt of compute capacity becomes operational. Interestingly, this also gives NVIDIA a possible minority stake in OpenAI, one of the most valuable tech startups globally.
Markets responded with great enthusiasm. NVIDIA’s stock jumped nearly 4%, pushing its market valuation close to $4.5 trillion. This surge reinforces NVIDIA’s role as the “tools supplier” at the heart of the AI revolution. For OpenAI, which already serves 700 million weekly users, this deal ensures it has the raw computing power to keep up with exploding demand and remain ahead of rivals.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang called it “the biggest AI infrastructure project ever,” while OpenAI chief Sam Altman remarked that “all progress begins with compute… and compute will power the economy of tomorrow.”

This partnership represents much more than just technology—it’s also a statement in the intensifying global AI race. By locking in a guaranteed and massive GPU supply, OpenAI has created a protective moat around its operations while placing immense pressure on competitors.
